Canteen’s next pop-up marks an end to Frome’s pioneering Green & Healthy project

Following six successful pop-ups over the last 15 months, Canteen – Frome Food Networks’ pay-what-you-can community restaurant – returns on 6th February, with some of Frome’s best chefs dishing up more affordable, delicious, and wholesome food.

This will mark an end to the Green & Healthy Frome (GHF) project – a partnership between Frome Town Council, Edventure, and Frome Medical Practice – that helped make projects such as Canteen possible. In 2023 the partnership won a £1.7m bid from The National Lottery’s Climate Action Fund (CAF) to help the town address issues surrounding climate and health. This helped manifest a variety of initiatives in that time, from helping locals save money on their heating bills to improving their opportunities for cycling.

With support from Edventure’s Future Shed, Frome Food Network’s aim as part of GHF was to ascertain whether a community restaurant concept could work in Frome, and if so, what it might look like.

“Having now served 898 meals over six pop-ups and across two locations, the idea has quite dramatically started to prove itself,” says Canteen Co-organiser Hugh Thomas. “And that, with some tweaks, it could function to some degree without the funding that’s supported it thus far.”

Canteen marks an end to the CAF funding period – and celebrates its successes thus far – with its next pop-up on Friday 6th February at Trinity Church Hall, BA11 3DE. Food will be served from 5pm-7.30pm or until it runs out. No reservations needed.
