What’s happening with the FFN in 2024

Something on these lines, but without the industrial lager brands

Last week, a small room of stakeholders in the local food environment met to discuss the possibility of a Long Table-style communal eating project for Frome.

While suggestions on how to approach such a thing were — quite rightly — mixed, appetite for the idea in principle was encouraging.

The major outcome of the meeting was an indication of what support there is for the proposal, and where it’s coming from, to better inform the FFN’s focal project for 2024.

With that in mind, here’s what’s happening: As part of a proposed 2024 residency with Future Shed, and following on from its experiments during last year’s FS residency, the FFN wants to put on four or five pop-up restaurant/canteens that would involve good, nutritious, delicious and accessible food; responsible sourcing; fair pay; narratives concerning food’s role in climate and the environment; and community.

Since the remit with Future Shed is ‘climate and health’, these aspects in particular will be uncompromisingly adhered to, while the ultimate intention of these pop-us is to create a blueprint for something more permanent.

In the meantime, keep track of any updates on the project in this Mighty Network space. But for the moment, that’s about the long and short of the project until we hear whether these plans have been accepted as part of the residency. After which, there will be more opportunities to learn about the project and how you might be able to get involved.
To that end, when I have a date for the FFN’s next evening social, you’ll be the first to know via the Mighty Network channel, this blog, or the (reinstated) WhatsApp group.
